Has e-commerce arrived to shake-up bills of landing?

It is Monday 25 January 2010, and the Master of the M/T Bro Deliverer sits in front of the computer on the bridge. He is ready to electronically sign the set of documents, including the bill of lading, for a cargo of refined products which he has just loaded onto his vessel. Instantly, he signs all the relevant documents and automatically makes them available to the terminal for issuing. In the past, this could have taken more than an hour as the Master would have to manually sign and stamp a pile of documents. Has e-commerce arrived to shake-up bills of lading?
